Playing around with different lighting and Shadows.
Its amazing how much you can change the mood of a picture through just moving the SoftBox Closer, Further away, in Front of the face or even Above the face.
Although its hard to know what facial expressions to ask your subject to make, I would usually just get them to relax the face and keep a neutral expression.
Clothing can also change the composition, I myself like shooting more of a smarter fashion with a single pendant round the neck depending on the look you are going for because sometimes it can distract from the subjects face.
